Meet the Surgeon

Dr. Shalin Shah, D.O.

After graduating high school from the Academy of Allied Health and Science, Dr. Shah received a scholarship to Monmouth University and received honors in Biology with a concentration in Molecular Cell Physiology. Following graduation from New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, he went on to complete his Orthopedic Surgery residency training at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center - Pinnacle Health in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. His residency training allowed him to train with several leaders at various institutions around the country including the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Shah subsequently completed the Louis A. Goldstein Spine Surgery fellowship at the University of Rochester in New York. He went further to receive additional training in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Adult Spinal Deformity at the San Diego Spine Foundation under direction of Drs. Gregory Mundis and Robert Eastlack.

Dr. Shah’s philosophy is rooted in patient education and communication. He is committed to providing an in-depth explanation of his patients’ diagnoses along with a thorough discussion of treatment options. He makes recommendations that are tailored to each patient’s desires and needs. While he primarily utilizes non-surgical care, operative intervention may be recommended when non-surgical measures are unsuccessful.

In the case that surgery may be an option, his goal is to offer the least amount of surgery that is necessary to achieve durable results. In line with that, Dr. Shah offers minimally-invasive techniques which allow him to avoid excessive muscle injury, and allows for a quicker recovery. Dr. Shah also performs endoscopic spine surgery, which allows him to treat certain problems through an “ultra minimally invasive” approach, further optimizing the patient experience. His treatment philosophy consists of spinal fusion being a last resort for surgical options. In the rare case this is recommended, he has experience in treating these cases with one of several minimally invasive options.

Dr. Shah is active in research and has presented his research at local and national meetings. He is a member of several organizations including the Cervical Spine Research Society, International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery, North American Spine Society, the Lumbar Spine Research Society, and the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics.

Dr. Shah has an interest in global health outreach and has experience volunteering overseas. He recently joined Global Spine Outreach in Cali, Colombia performing state-of-the-art pediatric spinal deformity surgery for free to children in need.
